Situated in Jesmond College, at the heart of our distinctive campus, MELL brings together an exceptionally diverse community of scholars working across a broad range of approaches to language and communication. From theoretical grammar and forensic linguistics to conversation analysis, corpus linguistics, animal communication and the transformative potential of artificial intelligence, our research reflects the richness and complexity of language in all its forms.

At MELL, we believe that intellectual diversity is one of our greatest strengths. Our academic staff represent a wide spectrum of theoretical perspectives, methodological traditions and strongly held convictions.

We encourage colleagues to develop ambitious research agendas and recognise that academic excellence can take many forms, not all of which are immediately measurable.

We are particularly proud of our longstanding traditions, including the annual Keldale Weekend, which has brought members of the department together for more than twenty years and continues to generate numerous memorable experiences.
