Bringing colleagues together for over twenty years
The annual Keldale Weekend is one of the Department of Modern English Language and Linguistics' longest-standing and most cherished traditions. Established more than twenty years ago by Distinguished Professor Hugo Banning, the weekend provides an opportunity for academic staff and postgraduate researchers to come together in an informal setting, away from the everyday demands of university life.
Held in February in the picturesque Cumbrian village of Keldale, the event combines outdoor activities, intellectual exchange and opportunities for relaxation and reflection. Accommodation is provided at a traditional rural hostel, whose distinctive character and peaceful surroundings have become an integral part of the Keldale experience.
A Weekend of Shared Experiences
The programme offers a varied selection of activities, allowing participants to explore new interests and strengthen relationships with colleagues.
A highlight of the weekend is the Saturday walking expedition, traditionally led by Professor Neil Flyte. The route takes participants through some of the region's most dramatic landscapes, including the celebrated Grey Crag Summit, offering spectacular views and opportunities to appreciate the natural beauty of the Lake District. Participants are reminded to bring suitable clothing and footwear, as weather conditions can be unpredictable.
For those who prefer indoor activities, Professor Banning hosts informal discussions on revolutionary literature, political cinema and the continuing relevance of Marxist thought. These sessions have proved particularly memorable over the years and frequently extend beyond their scheduled duration.
Evenings provide further opportunities for departmental interaction. Professor Cathy Grimm-Blaze traditionally prepares a communal vegan supper, while Dr Bella Marley organises her popular International Phonetic Alphabet Scrabble tournament. Played using specially designed oversized tiles, the competition encourages participants to combine linguistic knowledge with strategic thinking. Disagreements concerning the phonemic status of particular entries are resolved by reference to the tournament rules.

Building a Stronger Department
The Keldale Weekend reflects MELL's commitment to collegiality, intellectual diversity and the development of a supportive academic community.
By bringing together colleagues from different research traditions, the weekend encourages conversations that might not otherwise take place during the working year. Participants are invited to share their ideas, challenge established assumptions and develop a deeper appreciation of the department's many different perspectives.
Attendance is voluntary, although colleagues are strongly encouraged to participate wherever possible.
A Tradition That Continues to Evolve
Over the years, the Keldale Weekend has produced many lasting memories and has occasionally required participants to demonstrate considerable resourcefulness, adaptability and mutual support. The non-denominational prayer meeting held following Professor Flyte’s accident and subsequent retrieval by helicopter from Grey Crag Summit is fondly remembered as an occasion when almost the entire department came together in a spirit of solidarity.
The department remains committed to maintaining this valued tradition and looks forward to welcoming colleagues to future weekends, subject to the completion of the usual arrangements and relevant safety assessments.
