At the heart of Bede University's distinctive campus lies The Line, the covered pedestrian walkway connecting our eight colleges and providing a central meeting point for students, staff and visitors.
A Bold New Vision
With an investment of more than £3 million, the Redesign the Line project represented a significant milestone in the University's programme of modernisation. Following an extensive period of planning, consultation and construction, the original concrete paving was replaced with a striking mosaic surface, incorporating thousands of individually laid tiles in a rich variety of colours.
The design draws inspiration from the concept of The Diaspora, reflecting the movement of people, ideas and cultures across geographical and intellectual boundaries. Rather than imposing a single visual narrative, the mosaic invites individuals to discover their own meanings and connections within its complex arrangement of colour and form.

Maintaining Our Investment
A programme of specialist summer maintenance ensures that the mosaic continues to display its full range of colours and intricate surface detailing. This work is carefully scheduled outside the main teaching periods to minimise disruption to the University community.
The Line's textured surface also provides a distinctive acoustic character, contributing to the lively atmosphere of one of the campus's busiest pedestrian routes.
