After 36 years of dedicated service, Moyna Berry retires from the University Library.
Bede University is marking the retirement of Moyna Berry, who has served in the University's Inter-Library Loans department for an impressive 36 years.
Based in the Library Annex, Moyna has overseen the processing of thousands of requests, developing an encyclopaedic knowledge of library procedures and an unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest administrative standards.
A Commitment to Tradition
Throughout her career, Moyna has witnessed significant changes in the delivery of library services, including the introduction of computerised catalogues, electronic databases and online resource-sharing systems.
Under her stewardship, Bede's Inter-Library Loans service retained its distinctive rose-coloured paper request forms, which became a familiar feature of academic life at the University. Moyna has always maintained that their careful completion encourages important skills in accuracy, patience and independent problem-solving.
A Memorable Personality
Known for her direct manner, formidable knowledge of library regulations and high expectations of service users, Moyna has made a lasting impression on the Bede community.
Her office in the Library Annex, with its distinctive poster of Smaug from The Hobbit, has been a familiar destination for generations of researchers seeking publications unavailable through the University's own collections.
Professor Neil Flyte, of the Department of Modern English Language and Linguistics, recalled a particularly memorable exchange in 2012, describing it as an experience that had stayed with him throughout his academic career.
Looking to the Future
Moyna's departure will coincide with the introduction of a new online Inter-Library Loans portal, allowing students and staff to submit and track requests electronically for the first time.
A small gathering will be held in the Library Annex to recognise her achievements and wish her well in retirement.
