An inspiring new space for learning, collaboration and discovery
The Elizabeth Ellington Building represents one of the most ambitious developments in Bede University's history. Completed in 2024 at a cost of £30 million, the project has transformed the entrance to the historic Arnold Accrington Lecture Theatre, creating a striking new architectural landmark at the heart of our campus.
Named in honour of Elizabeth Ellington, a longstanding supporter of the University, the building embodies Bede's commitment to innovation, sustainability and the continuous enhancement of the student experience.
A Space Designed to Inspire
The centrepiece of the development is a spectacular three-storey glass atrium, designed to maximise natural light and create a welcoming environment for students, staff and visitors.
The atrium features a landscaped indoor pond, an ornamental waterfall and a gently curving pedestrian bridge, bringing together contemporary architectural design and the restorative qualities of water.
Carefully selected materials and finishes reflect the University's commitment to creating spaces that are both visually distinctive and responsive to the changing expectations of the higher education sector.
The development has also significantly enhanced the external appearance of the Arnold Accrington Lecture Theatre, providing a contemporary architectural setting for one of the University's longest-serving teaching facilities.
Investing in the Student Experience
The Elizabeth Ellington Building is much more than an entrance. It is a destination in its own right, offering new opportunities for informal interaction, reflection and the exchange of ideas.
The project reflects extensive consultation with architects, planning specialists, external advisers and other key stakeholders, ensuring that the final design meets the University's strategic aspirations.
Particular attention has been paid to the experience of moving between the atrium and the existing lecture theatre, creating a seamless connection between Bede's architectural heritage and its future ambitions. The project has fundamentally transformed the experience of arriving at a lecture.
Looking Ahead
The Elizabeth Ellington Building forms a central part of Bede University's ongoing programme of campus transformation. It demonstrates our determination to invest in facilities that make a lasting impression and reinforce our position as a forward-thinking institution.
As we look towards 2035, the building will stand as a visible symbol of our confidence in the future and our commitment to creating an outstanding university environment.
